If traveling between November and March, ensure your hotel has reliable heating systems like Bukharis (wood stoves) or electric heaters. Not all properties remain open in winter.
Many properties in remote areas have strict cancellation policies (sometimes non-refundable) due to limited seasons. Understand these before booking, especially for winter stays.

Spiti is best visited from May to October when roads are open and weather is pleasant. Kinnaur is accessible for longer periods from April to November. Winter visits (Dec-Feb) are possible but require special arrangements for cold weather. Each season offers unique experiences - summer for comfortable travel, autumn for clear mountain views, and winter for snow landscapes.
Most hotels in Kaza and main towns offer WiFi, though speeds may be slow (good enough for messaging). Mobile connectivity is limited - BSNL and Airtel work in some areas, while Jio has very limited coverage. Kinnaur has better connectivity overall. Remote villages may have no network coverage. We recommend informing family about potential communication gaps.
Budget options (₹1,000-2,000/night) typically provide clean beds, shared bathrooms (in some), basic meals, and heating in winter. Most don't have AC (not needed at high altitude), TVs or luxury amenities. Hot water may be available at specific times via solar-heated systems. Many budget homestays offer more authentic experiences than basic hotels.
Yes! Kaza now has several premium hotels (₹5,000-10,000/night) with modern amenities like Hotel White Nest and Spiti Villa Resort. Luxury camps operate in summer near Chandratal. Kinnaur offers high-end resorts like Apple Valley in Kalpa (₹6,500+) and luxury homestays in Sangla. These properties feature heating, attached bathrooms, restaurants, and often unique experiences like stargazing or spa services.
While homestays often accept walk-ins in smaller villages, we recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks ahead, especially for popular villages like Langza, Demul, or Chitkul. This ensures availability and lets hosts prepare for your arrival. During festivals or peak season (July-Aug), book 1-2 months in advance. Many homestays have limited capacity (2-5 rooms).
Most hotels accept cash (INR) only due to limited banking infrastructure. Some premium hotels in Kaza and Kalpa may accept cards or UPI, but don't rely on this. ATMs are scarce (only 2 in Kaza, 1 in Kalpa) so carry enough cash from Shimla, Manali or Reckong Peo. We recommend carrying small denomination notes (₹100, ₹200) as change can be difficult in remote areas.
