There's exactly one way to reach Kalpa: by road. There's no airport or railway station anywhere in Kinnaur district, so every visitor — whether starting from Delhi, Chandigarh, or Shimla — arrives by car, taxi, or bus along the same Hindustan-Tibet Road that has connected this valley to the rest of Himachal for over a century.

Every route to Kalpa funnels through Shimla, then follows the Sutlej River valley east through Narkanda, Rampur, and Karcham before climbing to Reckong Peo and finally Kalpa.
From Delhi

Duration: 2 days recommended, with an overnight in Shimla or Narkanda
Route: Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Karcham → Reckong Peo → Kalpa
From Chandigarh
Distance: ~340 km
Duration: 1 long day or 2 comfortable days
Route: Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Karcham → Reckong Peo → Kalpa
From Shimla

Duration: 8-10 hours by road
Route: Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Jeori → Karcham → Reckong Peo → Kalpa
Road Conditions
The Shimla-Kalpa road is paved for nearly its entire length and open year-round, which sets it apart from the Manali-Spiti route that closes completely each winter. That said:
July-August (monsoon): landslide risk on steeper stretches near Karcham and the Sutlej gorge — build in a buffer day
December-February: snow and ice on higher sections, especially near Kalpa itself; an experienced mountain driver matters more than the vehicle type
Rest of the year: generally smooth, if long and winding
Getting There by Bus
HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) runs buses from Shimla to Reckong Peo daily, with local connections onward to Kalpa. It's the budget option, but slow — expect the Shimla-Peo leg alone to take 9-10 hours.
Getting There by Private Vehicle
Most travelers hire a car and driver from Shimla or Chandigarh, since the route has enough hairpin turns and altitude gain that self-driving without mountain experience isn't recommended for a first visit. Should You Break the Journey?
Yes — going from Shimla to Kalpa in one push means 8-10 hours in the car. Most itineraries, including ours, split it with an overnight in Sarahan or Rampur, which also means arriving in Kalpa with enough daylight left for the Kinner Kailash sunset.
